Making Naples more Pedestrian Friendly

NaplesReserve-biking1It is no surprise that the gorgeous Naples weather bring out joggers, walkers, bikers and residence who just simply like to walk the beautiful beachfronts and some of the city’s most scenic streets on a daily basis. Soon, walkability could be an even larger part of the Naples lifestyle. Initiatives by the government, nonprofit organizations and private developers are creating a grand opportunity for the member of the Naples community and its visitors to move around without a car.

According to the National Association of REALTORS, studies show that Americans Prefer walkable communities more so now than they have in the past. Naples’ beautiful setting and its’ health-conscious mindset among everyone starting with the millennials to the senior adults say having easy access to sidewalks is an even greater priority when purchasing a home. 85% of home buyers say sidewalks are a positive factor when purchasing their home, and 61% of females indicated that having sidewalks with stores and restaurants to walk by is very important. In addition to that, nearly half of the respondents to this report would prefer overall to live in communities containing houses with small yards but with-in walking distance to the community’s amenities.

Not only is walking important, but so is biking. In November of 2015 Naples was names a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. Adding Additional bikes lanes and working with local law enforcement officials on safety and awareness efforts were major keys to the city receiving this recognition. Also in November, Naples City Council passed the Complete Streets Resolution that will help guide decisions about roadways and where to add additional bike lanes, shade trees and benches at bus stops.

All of these initiatives add to Naples as being a spectacular place to live. Not only do they help residents save money on gas and travel costs, they also reduce the impact on the environment and air quality. Greater walkability will not only help people experience a much healthier lifestyle, but will also create the additional benefit of taking cars off of the road during the city’s busy seasons. Less congestion and greater convenience could add value to many properties on the market.
